Galapagos Expedition Cruise Company Ecoventura
Achieves Rainforest Alliance Verification
MIAMI, FL, Dec. 7, 2011 – Ecoventura (http://www.ecoventura.com), the company that cossets guests sailing with its environmentally friendly fleet of small expedition vessels in the Galapagos, announces that it has earned Rainforest Alliance verification in recognition of its commitment to conserving the environment and supporting local communities.
Rainforest Alliance verification is an assurance that a hotel or tour operator has met comprehensive social, environmental and economic standards that conserve natural resources, protect wildlife and help local communities thrive. Rainforest Alliance verification is aligned with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council’s criteria, the gold standard for sustainable tourism.
“Displaying the Rainforest Alliance VerifiedTM mark in Ecoventura messaging will help bring the urgency of sustainability issues to the consumer,” said Santiago Dunn, Ecoventura president.
Dunn said his company is a natural fit because of its long-standing, mission-driven leadership in protecting the fragile ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands. “The Rainforest Alliance was one of our original mentors when we started our journey to green the operation in the late 1990's, being part of this new initiative makes us proud to continue the tradition and further our commitment to sustainability.”
Recognition for its visionary work in sustainable travel is not new for Ecoventura. The company was one of the first recipients (2000) of SmartVoyager, a voluntary environmental program developed by the local NGO Conservacion & Desarollo in Ecuador. This program gives a “green seal of approval” to tour boats that comply with requirements to tread lightly on the area’s fragile ecosystem.
In 2006 Ecoventura became the first fully Carbon Neutral operation in the Galapagos Islands. In 2008, the company was presented with the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism – Best in a Marine Environment Award. Distinguished judges noted Ecoventura’s contribution toward improving conditions for local people in Galapagos and for being among the first operators to be independently audited. In 2009, Ecoventura was honored with the Conde Nast World Savers Award as the top scoring cruise line. The panel of judges noted the company was exceptional in education, preservation, poverty and health. And In November 2009, Ecoventura received Travel + Leisure’s 5th annual Global Vision Award for Green Cruising.
“The Rainforest Alliance verification program helps transform the business practices of tourism companies and motivates tourists to support these efforts,” said Ronald Sanabria, vice president of sustainable tourism at the Rainforest Alliance. “Our long-term goal is to help the industry become socially and environmentally responsible as well as profitable, promoting tourism practices that protect ecosystems and improve the lives of individuals and communities.”
The Rainforest Alliance’s sustainable tourism program helps tourism professionals improve the sustainability of their businesses through training workshops and on-site technical assistance. Initiatives include adopting ecosystem and water conservation measures, reducing energy use, supporting local economies, hiring from within the community and reducing costs.

Green Expedition Cruise Company Ecoventura to Encourage Guests, Others
MIAMI, FL, Oct. 12, 2011 – Ecoventura (http://www.ecoventura.com) , the company that cossets guests who opt to sail with its environmentally friendly fleet of small expedition vessels in the Galapagos, announces a 2012 scholarship program for local students from the islands of Isabela, San Cristobal and Santa Cruz to study conservation and ecology-related issues.
Santiago Dunn, President, said that his company has pledged up to $4,800 to cover the cost of 12 scholarships for one course/module for 2012. Guests aboard Ecoventura’s fleet will be invited to donate to the scholarship fund that is dedicated to training young people to become leaders in society and contribute to the sustainable development of the islands, a World Heritage Site.
Donations can be made by going directly to the EPI web site at: https://www.ecologyproject.org/donate/.
“Developing critical-thinking skills and a conservation ethic along with knowledge of the problems that threaten the sustainability of the islands are among the main objectives of the training program,” Dunn said.
The program is under the auspices of Ecology Project International (EPI), a non-governmental, non-profit organization http://www.ecologyproject.org/ whose main goal is to inspire conservation in young people through education and field science programs. Since 2003 over 600 Galapagos teens age 16-17 have been engaged in EPI, focusing on science, conservation and intercultural exchange.
The 2012 goal is to conduct six ecology courses for 12 students each, benefiting a total of 72 students from across the province. Students spend 50 hours in the field directly involved in conservation actions concerning invasive species and the health and release of turtles into the wild. At the end of the course the best students will be invited to join a four night Galapagos cruise. A $400 donation makes the course possible for one student.

Ecoventura offers Five Tips on Getting the Most from a Snorkeling Outing in Galapagos waters
Ecoventura’s Environmentally-Friendly Fleet of Small Expedition Vessels
Allows Guests Access to Galapagos Waters for Daily Snorkeling Adventures
Green Operator Offers Five Tips on Getting the Most from a Snorkeling Outing
MIAMI, Aug. 31, 2010 – Ecoventura’s environmentally friendly fleet of small expedition vessels in the Galapagos allows guests of this visionary small-ship travel company (http://www.ecoventura.com/) to experience the Galapagos from as many land and water perspectives as possible. This includes snorkeling.
“Guests often tell us that their most sensational and enjoyable wildlife viewing comes from behind a mask while snorkeling,” said Ecoventura spokeswoman Doris Welsh.
“They also report how amazed they are with the number and variety of snorkeling outings we include in our itineraries.”
She said that in addition to guided shore excursions, guests can opt to snorkel or kayak at least once and sometimes twice daily in Galapagos waters. “Plus our small yachts (20 passengers) give us more time underwater as opposed to bigger vessels that take more time with the logistics of loading and unloading larger groups.”
“These are not-to-be-missed opportunities to snorkel with playful sea lions, penguins, sea turtles, graceful rays, tropical fish and even friendly sharks. You may even be able to snorkel with dolphins or find yourself spectator to a friendly feeding frenzy,” she said, recommending Gardner Islet at Gardner Bay for tropical fish, sea lions, rays and sharks; Sombrero Chino for penguins; and Punta Espinosa for sea turtles.
Following are Ecoventura’s tips on how to make the most of a snorkeling adventure in the Galapagos.
>Find a mask that fits. When pressed to the face it should stick (better yet, bring a mask and snorkel from home, but do use the fins on board the ship (these are bulky items and take up too much room in a suitcase).
>Bring a skin suit (and dive gloves) to wear underneath the wet suit provided on board. The skin provides added warmth and an extra layer of protection. Note that at the surface, Galapagos waters are very comfortable for snorkeling averaging 70 to 78 degrees F varying on time of year, currents and depth.
>Before a trip get a copy of the Galapagos Reef Fish Identification Guide by Paul Humann. http://www.amazon.com/Reef-Fish-Identification-Paul-Humann/dp/187834806X
>Always snorkel with a buddy and stay within eye distance and ear shot of the group and Zodiac. Life vests are available and recommended for some swimmers.
>Consider July to October for optimum snorkeling. Water temperatures are warmer December to May, however the marine mammals (dolphins and whales) as well as sea lions and sharks are more active when temperatures are cooler July to October.
Welsh points out that, “Starting in 2012, due to new regulations for all cruise companies in the Galapagos, ships will no longer be in port for a full day during the cruise itinerary so the possibility of scheduling an optional “dive day” will no longer be possible. However snorkeling, especially in deep water, will still provide a “dive like” experience.”
Ecoventura last year helped launch DivEncounters Alliance (http://www.divencounters.com/) to handle sales and reservations for the growing scuba dive market in the Galapagos and elsewhere. For scuba divers who want to combine diving in Galapagos with wildlife top side, the fleet’s luxury dive live-aboard, Galapagos Sky offers one week in tandem with a second week on Eric, Flamingo or Letty. Passengers are eligible for a 5 percent discount on selected departure dates.

Ecoventura offers Two new 7 night Cruise itineraries starting January 2012
For Immediate Release
Ecoventura Offers Two 7-Night Cruise Itineraries
Starting January 2012 on 20-Passsenger M/Y Eric, Flamingo I and Letty
New Itineraries Developed to Comply with New Galapagos National Park Regulations Will Enhance Experience While Minimizing Visitor Impact
MIAMI, July 27, 2011 – Ecoventura’s (http://www.ecoventura.com) environmentally friendly fleet of small expedition vessels in the Galapagos will alternate two 7-night itineraries approved by the Galapagos National Park and Marine Reserve beginning on Jan. 29, 2012.
Three 20-passenger sister yachts, MY Eric, Flamingo and Letty are charged with helping protect and preserve the fragile eco system while engaging guests in the splendors of the Galapagos archipelago.
Cruise rates start at $3,350 per person double occupancy per week. Shorter options are sometimes available on seasonal departure dates only for a 5 or 6 night cruise.
“Our team of experts carefully developed two distinct itineraries that would best benefit our client’s interests and allow them to see the greatest variety of species of wildlife possible,” explains Ecoventura spokesperson Doris Welsh. “The two weeklong itineraries can easily be combined to create the ultimate Galapagos experience providing a comprehensive view of the region’s geology, history, wildlife and culture.”
The itineraries complement park efforts to reduce erosion, pressure and possible stress on wildlife at the 14 most popular central visitor sites in the archipelago. This is being accomplished by redistributing visitor numbers across more sites away from the Central Islands. All tour boats in Galapagos must comply with this new regulation which will ultimately enhance visitor experience, said Welsh.
Both itineraries offer two guided land visits daily, snorkeling, dingy rides and kayaking, together optimizing opportunities to see iconic species of wildlife that make Galapagos famous: giant tortoises, penguins, frigate birds, boobies, flamingos, Darwin Finches, albatross, flightless cormorant, marine and land iguanas, lizards, many varieties of sea birds, whale, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and sea lions.
Passengers who chose Itinerary A will visit the Southern & Central islands stopping at La Galapaguera, Cerro Brujo, Punta Pitt on San Cristobal, Punta Suarez and Gardner Bay on Espanola, Punta Cormorant, Post Office Bay and Devil’s Crown on Floreana, Humedales, Wall of Tears, Sierra Negra on Isabela, Bartolome, Black Turtle Cove and South Plaza Island as well as the highlands of Santa Cruz.
Passengers who book Itinerary B will visit the Northern & Western islands stopping at Playa Ochoa, Leon Dormido in San Cristobal, Prince Philips Steps and Darwin Bay in Genovesa, North Seymour, Bachas Beach, Darwin Station on Santa Cruz, Punta Espinoza in Fernandina, Tagus Cove, Elizabeth Bay and Urbina Bay in Isabela, Puerto Egas on Santiago, Santa Fe and Rabida Island.
See: http://www.ecoventura.com/expeditionyachts/itineraries2012.aspx
After Jan. 29, 2012 Ecoventura guests can combine the two itineraries for an all-encompassing two-week program. Guests who book two consecutive weeks back to back are eligible for a 5 percent discount applicable any week (excluding holidays).

Ecoventura Supports Pack for a Purpose Program
Ecoventura Supports Pack for a Purpose Program
To Deliver School, Medical Supplies to
Underprivileged Youth in San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands
MIAMI, FL, Feb. 16, 2011 – Ecoventura http://www.ecoventura.com/, the green cruise company operating a fleet of small expedition vessels in the Galapagos region, has teamed up with Pack for a Purpose, www.packforapurpose.org a charitable organization whose mission encourages travelers to save room in their travel luggage for five pounds of school or medical supplies that can make a difference to communities they’re visiting.
What a traveler is recommended to bring is determined in advance with the tour operator. Pack with a Purpose works with top tour operators from around the world. For example, in the Galapagos, Ecoventura’s team notes that one youth organization needs computer equipment, digital cameras, scanners, a sound system, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, rulers, English teaching books, English/Spanish dictionaries, software and ecology-focused teaching aids. Another organization for physically and mentally challenged children needs puzzles, rubber balls, crayons, modeling clay and colored pencils.
Doris Welsh, Ecoventura’s Director of Sales & Marketing, said that participation in Pack with a Purpose is aligned with the company’s community outreach and conservation mission programs.
“We invite people to ask us what they need to pack,” she said, adding 400 pencils and five deflated soccer balls can add up five pounds to help poor communities. She suggested that through Ecoventura Yachts - Ecuador // Pack For A Purpose, travelers can also free up space while they’re at the destination to purchase handicrafts they can bring home with them, thereby helping the economy and people in another way.
As one of the most ecology-minded and socially responsible tour companies in Ecuador, based in San Cristobal, Ecoventura has helped to support various initiatives that benefit the local population living in the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristobal. With a population of 5,600, San Cristobal has the second largest population in the Islands after Santa Cruz. It is the fifth largest island and the only Island with fresh water and an airport in town.
Through the foundation “Gotitas de Esperanza” (Drops of Hope), Ecoventura has pledged to sponsor the salaries for teachers and physical therapists who work at the Alejandro Alvear School located on San Cristobal Island. During the day, the school provides therapy for children with Down’s Syndrome and other physical disabilities. In the evenings, the school serves the adult population of the Island through programs such as teaching sign language for the hearing impaired.

Expedition Cruises for Fall/Winter 2011 in Galapagos
Available on Sliding Discount Scale with Rates Up to 15 Percent Off
Ecoventura Promises No Reductions in Its On-going Sustainability Program
That Distinguishes It as an Eco-Travel Leader in the Region
MIAMI, Jan. 19, 2011 -- A sliding scale of discounts between now and next fall helps secure a bon voyage and sustainable travel for cruise bookings made directly with Ecoventura (http://www.ecoventura.com/) and its eco-friendly fleet of small expedition vessels in the Galapagos Islands. Multiple departures beginning in late-August and running through mid-December are available with up to 15 percent off if booked 180 days out from departure. The “Early Bird” booking discounts are reduced as passage is booked closer: 10 percent if booked 179-90 days out and then 5 percent from 89 days out to the day of departure.
The 2011 cruise dates that fall under the Early Bird Booking Discount are: Aug 28-04 Sep, Sep 4-11, Sep 11-18, Sep 18-25, Sep 25-02 Oct, Oct 2-9, Oct 9-16, Oct 16-23, Oct 23-30, Oct 30-06 Nov, Nov 6-13, Nov 13-20, Nov 27-04 Dec, Dec 4-11, and Dec 11-18.
Doris Welsh, Ecoventura’s Director of Sales & Marketing says that September to early December is one of her favorite times to tour the islands, “It is the best time of the year to see marine mammals; pilot whales, bottlenose and common dolphins, the water temps are cooler (we do have wet suits on board) so the marine life is active and it’s prime time for viewing spotted eagle rays, cow rays and sea turtles. Baby sea lion pups are being born and baby frigate birds, albatross and boobies are just hatching. Plus, it’s our “slow time” and the Galapagos Islands can be less crowded (not that it is ever too crowded).”
Welsh underscored that the Galapagos cruise discounts are designed to attract and secure additional bookings from adventure travelers who recognize and appreciate Ecoventura’s passion and commitment to sustainable travel in this eco-fragile region.
“Frankly, the more business we have, the more dollars we can and will commit to our challenge of leading the region to a secure position ecologically,” Welsh said.
Also new for 2011, all passengers on Ecoventura’s three expedition yachts Eric, Flamingo and Letty will be offered a complimentary glass of house wine or a local beer from Ecuador during dinner each night. This follows the company’s commitment to locally-sourced products, food and beverages.
About Ecoventura: Ecoventura is a family-owned company based in Guayaquil, Ecuador, with sales offices in Quito and Miami. In operation since 1990, the cruise company transports 4,000+ passengers annually aboard its fleet of three expedition vessels; Eric, Flamingo and Letty, identical, superior first-class 20-passenger motor yachts. The company also operates the M/V Galapagos Sky, a 16-passenger Galapagos Liveaboard diving offering 7-night weekly itineraries visiting the northern islands of Wolf and Darwin. All of its vessels have been purposefully retrofitted to meet or exceed the highest possible environmental standards.
